Your #Careerlion Reading List for Career Transitions
As you may have read in our earlier blogs, both Liona and I started on new professional adventures November last year. Speaking for myself, it has been a great adventure so far. However, it is also quite an adjustment. I have and had lots of questions starting in the new position. That is why I have made a reading list for myself to deal with the change itself, in addition to the knowledge I have still to obtain about the new domain. I personally feel that in your professional career it is not always about how much you already know about a certain domain. It is the way you carry yourself in your team and organization and obtain the knowledge that you need. Keeping that in mind, please read on if you are curious to know which books have made the cut.
Master Your Next Move
Master Your Next Move: Proven Strategies for Navigating the First 90 Days – and Beyond is written by Micheal D. Watkins, who is the expert on accelerating leadership transitions. The book’s aim is literally to help you “master” your transition into a new role. It provides a framework and tools that you can apply in any transition.
I received a copy to review this book via Netgalley. You can expect a more detailed review in the coming future on Master Your Next Move when I have finished. This book has seriously been one of the best books I have read in a while. It is very thought provoking and the perfect read for anyone (planning on) transitioning. I love the way each chapter ends with a practical checklist that really is applicable in your professional live, how it is structured, and the clarifying figures throughout the book. Another gem in the Harvard Business Review collection.
The First 90 Days
The First 90 Days: Proven Strategies for Getting Up to Speed Faster and Smarter is another book by Micheal D. Watkins. This book was recommended to me by a former colleague. While I did not manage to read this one yet, I am still very eager to get myself a copy. Even more, now that I am impressed by Master Your Next Move. If you want to take a short cut, I also found a great summary written by Blaz Kos to read in the meantime.
The Making of a Manager
The Making of a Manager by Julie Zhuo claims to be a handbook to be the kind of manager you wish you had for everyone that is new to the job, a veteran leader, or looking to be promoted. I was happy to receive a copy for review purposes provided by Netgalley, as this book really matches with my ambitions. I am very curious to learn her secrets and recipes for success. Especially, since the author became a manager at 25 and struggled her way through. Another persuader is her growth mindset that great managers are made.
