Gratitude, what’s in it for me?
It’s the last week of 2017 and what a year has that been. However, we feel like we’re saying this every year, but that doesn’t mean there’s no truth to it. Nonetheless, this is the perfect time of the year to look back and reflect on those moments we’re most grateful for. Did you know gratitude is actually good for you? Read on if you’re curious to learn more!
According to Wikipedia: Gratitude, thankfulness, thanksgiving, or gratefulness, from the Latin gratus ‘pleasing, thankful’, is a feeling of appreciation felt by and/or similar positive response shown by the recipient of kindness, gifts, help, favors, or other types of generosity, towards the giver of such gifts. As Tony Robbins describes in his book Awaken the Giant Within: Negative emotions have no room of manifesting if a person is feeling grateful. Therefore, whenever you’re feeling gratitude it will positively influence your mental state. In a psychological study, test groups were instructed to make records of their moods, coping behaviors, health behaviors, physical symptoms, and overall life appraisals. Results from the study showed that daily conscious focus on blessings may have emotional and interpersonal benefits.
Liona’s personal moments of gratitude
In the workplace: The beginning of the year was kind of a crazy one as my time as company vlogger brought me more than I could have imagined. Not only was it nice to get a lot of positive feedback on this, it also improved my communication and media skills. A little later in the year, I was presented with the opportunity to work on one of the coolest (in my opinion) infrastructure projects out there: The construction of world’s biggest sea lock. Believe me, it was pure happiness and awesomeness along with the gratitude that I was feeling.
In the lion’s den: At the beginning of 2017 I moved to Rotterdam. I have been loving living here so much, I rarely get out of the city during the weekends. I also love that there are really nice places to hang out with friends, family or the boyfriend on just about any corner.
Out and about: The same move had to be celebrated with a girl’s night out. I honestly could not have picked out a better (rare) night out as it was during that particular party that I met the guy that is now my boyfriend. Was it faith or was it coincidence? I am not sure. What I am sure about, is that I am grateful I put my regular granny behaviors aside for that particular night!
Abroad: I loved eating sacher torte with my family in Vienna and watching a Paris Saint Germain game with the boyfriend in Paris. I also loved the holiday I went on with Ashley. I am grateful for having a bestie working in aviation, securing me a super affordable ticket to Asia. I am grateful to have seen one of nature’s world wonders in Halong Bay. I am grateful for having the best shopping buddy in Hong Kong and Malaysia. But most importantly I am grateful for having the best friend to travel and share these precious memories with!

In the workplace: I am so grateful for having the best colleagues ever. They are such great people and make work so much more fun. I really love the team and our team spirit. Also, I am very grateful for the dedication and faith of the team in getting our system live this year. We got so many positive reactions, even from the Executive Vice President of Commercial Strategy at Air France-KLM himself. A great way to end the year! I can’t wait to continue our work in the new year.
In the lion’s den: Health is such a precious thing, that can be taken from you before you know it. This year, we had some devastating news. My aunt was diagnosed with breast cancer. I am very grateful that my aunt is now cancer free. While she is still struggling with her health, I hope that she will soon regain her full health. Moreover, I am very thankful that I was able to find the right specialists who have and continue to work on getting me pain-free again. I am so happy that my surgery went successfully and is now finally behind me, so that I can work on my own recovery as well. Also, I am very grateful for my cute boyfriend who has taken care of me when I couldn’t even walk.
Out and about: I am so grateful for getting the chance to go to Jamiroquai. I was ecstatic, especially when he finished the concert with “Virtual Insanity”. My favorite song that today seems even more relevant than when it was written. Also, I am really thankful for having seen David Arrow’s work in person. Those photographs truly are pure magic. With work, I was also able to visit the A380 Hangar and Paris Air Show, both incredible experiences for an aviation fan like myself. I am also very happy Jamie Oliver has decided to continuously open more of his restaurant concepts in the Netherlands. I love you Jamie!
Abroad: I am so grateful for all the trips I was able to go on this year, including trips to: Panama, Costa Rica, Antwerp, London (multiple times), Hamburg, Dublin, Keulen, Nice (numerous times), Paris (again multiple times), Munich, Prague, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Kuala Lumpur, and Gdynia in Poland. Yes, I feel spoiled seeing this list. Liona, I am also so grateful for having found each other, our holiday together, and being able to build even more precious memories. I really feel blessed being able to travel the world with my friends and cutie pie. This year has been amazing!
