Embarrassing office stories
Embarrassing, awkward, confusing, inconvenient, and uncomfortable situations. It has been less than five months since I started working at my current job, but I have already collected some of the former named situations. Stories that I am sharing with you, dear Career Lion, in the hope I can prevent you from experiencing the same awkward moments too. And since sharing is caring, I’d rather share and laugh about it than “die” of shame. Let this also be a reminder to myself, in the process of learning and dressing for the office life.
Summer wardrobe malfunctions
Career Lions born and raised in The Netherlands, generally don’t have to deal with high summer temperatures. So here I am, clueless on what to wear to the office on those warm and sticky summer days. I learned the hard way that 20 denier tights are not the most reliable when it comes to covering your legs. After only a few hours, I stood up from my desk to walk to the bathroom. On my way to the bathroom, I noticed one of my co-workers staring at my thighs. When I looked down I saw I had a huge ladder running through my tights, literally from my ankle up to the waist Nice… and no off course I did not bring backups. I had no choice but to finish the workday with ripped tights, must have been an awful look.
Usually when wearing a blouse or a shirt, I wear a cami underneath. Not only is it warm and comfy, it also makes sure your blouses are crease free during the day. During the summer I tend to leave the cami behind, because of the heat. Unfortunately for me I did not realise that the shirts I normally wear are a bit see-through or cropped. By the time I looked in the mirror, off course already at the office, the only thing I could do was to wear my jacket to cover up. Sweating my ass off was actually more comfortable than getting stares at my chest.
The last and most recent wardrobe malfunction had to be my dress that is too short. Too short? How could you not have seen that one coming, you might wonder. I am not quite the morning person, which means that my preparation time is pretty tight. Every extra minute that can possibly be spend in bed, I will gladly take. So I threw on this particular dress that I wear more often (just with tights). I was just a few meters from the parking lot, when my laces came undone. I kneeled to fix them and detected a slight breeze around the butt area, only to find out that my dress was so short it cropped onto my behind. Luckily for me only a passing student from the school across the street had seen the incident, rather than a colleague. I spend the day in a rather stiff position, awkwardly trying to keep my dress from creeping up. It is safe to say I already had my fair share of wardrobe malfunctions.
How to prevent this from happening again: Check my outfit one final time before leaving the house. While checking in the mirror, move around a bit like you would do during the day. Also, ALWAYS bring a pair of extra tights when wearing them.
Automatic pilot gone wrong
As the cherry on top of my embarrassing story pie, I present you this gem. I am quite the fanatic when it comes to drinking my three litres of water a day. Drinking this amount of water causes you to visit the bathroom quite often. In my case, so often that I walk the route to the bathroom on automatic pilot. Sadly, my automatic pilot has not been fully developed yet since I walked into the men’s bathroom. I think I saw someone in there for about a millisecond and jumped out of there as quickly as I could.
How to prevent this from happening again: Do not walk around on automatic pilot in the office! Not only could it lead to an embarrassing moment like mine, you might hurt yourself or someone else if you bump into a person (who might me carrying hot drinks).
Off course these embarrassing moments need to be taken with a grain of salt. It was quite humorous and has not led to real consequences. Luckily my shameful stories have been limited to a few great party favours. Now I have been quite brutal and honest here. Therefore, I’m also curious about your embarrassing moments in your work environment, share them in the comments if you dare.
