Tips to get yourself in a better mental state

We’ve all been there, your alarm clock goes off six o’clock in the morning, but the only thing going through your mind is: “NOT TODAY”. Working a full time job is fun and fulfilling, but can also be quite challenging on those mornings when you’re having a rough time. Whether I had to deal with a high workload or getting over a breakup, I always find myself refusing to start my day negatively. These are some of the tricks I use when I am having a mentally challenging time. Taking the time to do some of these tricks will get you in the right mental state and get you ready to take on the day.

ONE || When you go into a mental survival mode just ask yourself one question: “Am I in any physical danger or pain?” 99% of the time you will find that you are actually not in any physical difficulty of some sorts. As Derek Sivers explained in one of his blogs, you are just imagining or remembering things . After establishing there is no real danger, you will feel somewhat comforted. This basic question applies to almost every uncomfortable situation and will help you feel better.

TWO || Take three deep breaths. Make sure to breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth. I am aware of the fact that breathing sounds like the biggest cliché, but its effectiveness has actually scientifically been proven that deep breathing ensures to activate the parasympathetic nervous system. This is the part of our nervous system that is responsible for mindfulness in our mind and body. Taking three breaths is really simple and will help you to reduce stress immediately.

THREE || Taking a shower will automatically make you feel better and ready for the day. Step it up by having a shower where you alternate hot with super cold water. The transition from hot to cold and back creates a stressor on your body, which leads to a change of physiology. The change in your physique will elevate your mood, the same way smiling or putting on some makeup helps. Cold therapy is also one of the elements of the famous Wim Hof Method.

FOUR || To get you out of a panic state, you have to create the circumstances to think clearly. One way that could help is mediation. Take a short time out, ten minutes should be sufficient, to sit down and let your thoughts go. Meditation will help you provide a clear mind and make better decisions. My personal favourite is to start my day with a 10 minute session of Headspace, I am currently doing the anxiety pack. If I am having a nervous breakdown during the day, I like using the three minute SOS meditation session.

FIVE || What if we told you that it is actually possible to eat yourself happy? Ever noticed that your negative emotions are heightened whenever you’re feeling hungry and tired, or should I say HANGRY? Your mind tricks you into making every situation worse when you’re deprived of food and sleep. Even though it has no long-term effect, you can cover up with caffeine to take on the day. Make sure to eat healthy fats like avocado and eggs to feel satisfied. Eat a banana during the day, as it has been proven that banana’s stimulate your brain’s secretion of the hormone serotonin. Serotonin is the happiness hormone, which is definitely welcome on a rough morning.

SIX || If you have the time, try to squeeze in a short workout. Exercise, stretch, get the blood flow going. Recommendations for short workouts are Blogilates or Gymnastic Bodies. Increasing your heart rate and blood flow is not only positive for your body, but actually enhances your brain and therefore mental state. A workout of approximately twenty minutes should do the trick.

Usually, doing three out of six items listed should help you a lot. But in case all things fail and your work is flexible enough, just work from home. Taking your bad mood to the workplace could influence others around you and your personal performance. Put on some comfortable clothes and make yourself a nice cup of tea. Most importantly do not take any rash decisions, just sit it out for the day. Get to bed nice and early and we promise you tomorrow will be a better day.
