Three Books to Gift this Christmas
Don’t we all want to give our loved ones the perfect gift for Christmas? Of course we do, but reality is finding the right one can definitely be challenging and time consuming. I believe books are a great gift, as one can never have too many. Reading bBooks influence your way of living and provides a road to peace in the chaos called life. Here are our top picks to gift this holiday season, or to put on your personal wish list.
The Daily Stoic
In The Daily Stoic, Ryan Holiday with his co-author Stephen Hanselman have written 366 meditations on wisdom, perseverance, and the art of living. They have prepared a page to read every day, with central themes each month. Taking ideas from great Stoics such as Seneca, Epictetus, and Aurelius, to apply in our #careerlion lives. Stoicism is a form of philosophy that can best be described as:
“a systematic philosophy, dating from around 300 b.c., that held the principles of logical thought to reflect a cosmic reason instantiated innature.”
Stoicism is basically being indifferent to pleasure or pain. The book is a great way to put life into perspective and making this a daily routine to meditate. A serious must have for all career lions out there determined to engineer and optimize their lives. I have read one page a day since the end of October, simply because I could not wait any longer. Where I sleep, the book sleeps. The Daily Stoic has become part of my bedtime ritual and will continue to do so for many nights to come. Gifting this book for Christmas will be perfect timing for the receiver to start reading from the start of the book, January 1st.
Tools of Titans
Timothy Ferris new book Tools of Titans also makes a great gift for this Christmas or any upcoming occasion. For those of you who are not familiar with Tim Ferris, what is wrong with you? No, just kidding. Tim Ferris has one of the most intriguing podcasts, in which he interviews world-class performers. In case you haven’t noticed, Liona and I are die-hard fans. After hundreds of podcasts and publishing multiple books, he has decided to bundle all of his acquired wisdom into one book: Tools of Titans. It basically contains all his notes from hours and hours of interviews with fascinating people and the results of his own experiments. The tips from this book need to be included in every #careerlions toolbox. Therefore, making it the ultimate gift this season. I myself am very much hoping a loved one is reading this and decides this is the perfect gift for me! Subtle enough right?
We Are Our Brain
Brain researcher Dick Swaab in his book We Are Our Brain explains that we don’t just have brains, but are our brains. Brains shape our potential, limitations, and character. The book takes us through all stages of life, explaining what is going on from the moment we are in the womb to when we get Alzheimer’s. The book covers very interesting and provocative topics in relation to the brain, such as sexuality and religion. Even though this book was already published in 2010, I know way too many people that have not yet read this book. This book is a great gift to anyone, as it will interest him or her at any stage in life. There is no better way to understand yourself and others, than through reading this piece of brilliance. Without this understanding, there is no way of truly excelling and appreciating our precious brains.
